Running the Amazing Race at Your Summer Camp

We recently held the Amazing Race and our summer camp and it was such a success! We've had so many parents tell us that we must run this event again next spring. That being said, we learned a lot along the way and found many ways to make life easier when planning this event.

Here's what I learned about running an effective Amazing Race at camp, along with some tips to make your event unforgettable.

Planning Makes Perfect:

  • Variety is Key: Mix up the challenges! Include physical activities, mental puzzles, tasks that utilize hidden talents (think arts & crafts or musical skills), and challenges that require teamwork.
  • Think Like a Camper: Design challenges that are fun and achievable for your age group. Consider incorporating classic camp activities with a twist.
  • Location, Location, Location: Utilize the entire camp! Scout out hidden corners, natural landmarks, and underused areas to create a sense of discovery.
  • Clue Me In: Write clear, concise clues that are challenging but not impossible to solve. Test them out beforehand to avoid confusion.
  • Think Outside the Box: Don't be afraid to get creative! Incorporate silly penalties or bonus tasks for added fun.

Lessons Learned:

  • Balance is Key: Strike a balance between individual and team challenges. This encourages collaboration but also allows individual skills to shine.
  • Keep it Flowing: Stagger the start times of teams to avoid bottlenecks at challenges. Plan for multiple routes to checkpoints if necessary. We did not do this, but will for sure be doing it next time!
  • Prepare for the Unexpected: Have backup plans for challenges that might be affected by weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Embrace the Chaos: Things might not go exactly according to plan, and that's okay! Be flexible and have a good sense of humor.
  • Most Importantly, Have Fun! The Amazing Race is all about creating a fun and memorable experience for your campers.
